Pretending to be someone you\u2019re not is uncomfortable, exhausting, and possibly embarrassing.<\/p>\n

The tough thing about this issue is that there\u2019s a very fine line.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s totally okay to pitch yourself a certain way to guys\u2014as long as your pitch is fundamentally true. If it lines up with who you really are, then it\u2019s not really a pitch at all.<\/p>\n

For example, Dove\u2019s \u201cReal Beauty\u201d campaign works because it\u2019s good marketing and it aligns with the company\u2019s mission statement.<\/p>\n

If they ran ads saying every woman is beautiful just the way they are, but only used pictures of heavily airbrushed models, it would never work.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, Dove is just soap.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019ve found an authentic way to describe who they are beyond their product . . . and their ads don\u2019t just get the job done. They\u2019re inspiring.<\/p>\n

You can do the same thing when you meet a guy. You can present the best possible version of yourself and be 100% authentic<\/em> at the same time.<\/p>\n

The Prep<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Most of the time, guys know a bit about you before you even speak.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll see you across the room or read your online dating profile. So you need to do some authenticity prep work.<\/p>\n

For example, if you do the online dating thing, make sure everything from your profile text to the photo you use paints a flattering-but-true picture of who you are.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re meeting guys at a bar, wear something that looks good on you, but stick with a style that lines up with how you normally dress.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a good rule of thumb…<\/p>\n

If your friends wouldn\u2019t recognize you, you\u2019re not being authentic. That goes for online profiles and face-to-face encounters.<\/p>\n

The Pitch<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When the conversation starts, you have a short window of opportunity to make a good first impression.<\/p>\n

This is where most of us get nervous and end up saying something that doesn\u2019t represent who we really are.<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t do that. I\u2019m serious. It\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n

If you have a cheesy personality and like goofy jokes, tell one. If you really are a sports fan, say something about the game. If you hate the bar scene, it\u2019s okay to admit that.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s your pitch.<\/p>\n

Humor goes a long way at this point. A casual joke will help both of you drop your guard, which makes it easier to stop \u201ctrying\u201d to be yourself . . . so you can just be yourself.<\/p>\n

The Payoff<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Every conversation you start that way won\u2019t launch an epic romance.<\/p>\n

In fact, most dating scene getting-to-know-you conversations don\u2019t even last that long\u2014until you meet someone who\u2019s a real match for you.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s the one-two payoff.<\/p>\n

One, you don\u2019t waste time chasing guys who don\u2019t really fit into your life. And two, when you meet someone who does, you\u2019ll both know it much sooner.<\/p>\n

You have a limited amount of time to meet guys. Don\u2019t waste it on men who aren\u2019t what you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n
